US Mint Silver Coin Sales Climb to Annual Record as Silver Price Rebounds

The U.S. Mint has sold a record number of silver coins this year as demand for the physical metal helped futures in New York recover more than 20 percent since falling to a five-year low early this month.

Purchases of American Eagle silver coins reached 43.051 million ounces in 2014, data on the mint’s website shows. That tops last year’s 42.7 million ounces, the previous all-time high, according to an e-mailed statement yesterday. There are still enough supplies to keep selling 2014-dated coins through the week starting Dec. 15, the mint estimates.

A surge in demand prompted the mint to suspend sales in November for more than a week because of a lack of inventory. When the coins were again made available for purchase, it was on allocated basis. Buying has increased with prices heading for a second straight annual loss, the longest slump since 1992.

“This has been a very strong year for us,” said Michael Kramer, the president of New York-based MTB Inc., a dealer authorized to purchase coins directly from the mint and sell to consumers. “It was especially busy on days prices took a big tumble.”

Silver futures for March delivery jumped 5.3 percent to $17.134 an ounce on the Comex yesterday, the biggest gain since Dec. 1.

Prices declined 12 percent this year through yesterday, after dropping 36 percent in 2013. On Dec. 1, the metal reached $14.155, the lowest since 2009.

2013 Wood Bison Silver Bullion Coin - Canadian Wildlife Series

The 2013 Wood Bison Silver Bullion Coin features a depiction of the animal galloping in a display of strength and endurance. Similar to the two prior releases, the image is framed within a circular area with the inscription “Canada” above and “Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur” below.

The fineness of “9999″ is included within the image area. The reverse design is by Canadian artist Emily Damstra.

Although the coins are part of a bullion series with corresponding pricing and availability, a maximum of one million will be produced by the Royal Canadian Mint Ottawa facility. The mintage limit and the appeal of the alternating designs provides the potential for appreciation outside of the bullion value.

The concept of limited mintage bullion releases has been used by other world mints. The RCM’s Wildlife series seems to have achieved a measure of success and popularity with bullion investors and coin collectors. This may set the stage for similar series in the future.

The “Wood Bison” design was announced at the World Money Fair in Berlin. The RCM has indicated that the coins will soon be available through their network of bullion distributors, although no exact date has been specified.

Canadian Wildlife Silver Bullion Coins are produced as a three-year series issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. Dates on each are either 2011, 2012 or 2013.

A total of six unique coins are included within the series, each featuring a unique reverse design showcasing a different member of the diverse creatures found in Canada.


Every coin is struck from one ounce of .9999 fine silver to a diameter of 38 mm. The 3.29 mm thick strikes have a reeded edge and a legal tender face value of CAD $5.

Despite the investment-intended nature of the bullion coins, many collectors have also shown extreme interest in the series. That is largely attributable to the unique designs, level of silver purity and the limited mintage nature of the program. Coins of the Canadian Wildlife series feature a maximum mintage of 1,000,000 per design.

All six silver bullion coins contain the same basic obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt, the portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS and the relevant year 2011, 2012 or 2013.

The reverse of each coin depicts a different creature of Canadian wildlife. Reverse inscriptions include CANADA, 9999, FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR and the initials of the artist for the design.

2011 Canadian Wolf Silver Bullion Coins made their debut in September of 2010. As indicated by the name, the coin depicts a wolf on its reverse. The snowy scene of the canid also includes an image of a full moon. The reverse was designed by Senior Royal Canadian Mint Engraver William Woodruff.

The Royal Canadian Mint released 2011 Grizzly Silver Bullion Coins in January of 2011. A roaring mature grizzly bear is shown on the reverse of the strike along the edge of a body of water. Like the first coin of the series, the reverse of this coin was also designed by Senior Mint Engraver William Woodruff whose initials can be seen to the left of the bear.

Issued in September of 2011, the 2012 Canadian Cougar Silver Bullion Coin appeared as the third strike of what had become an extremely popular series. Showcased on the reverse is the image of a cougar which is also known as pumas, mountain lions or mountain cats. The William Woodruff design shows the cat with its front paws on a fallen tree limb.
